Greenwood Place Assisted Living
and The Villas at Bellevue held our first
Fire Safety for Elder Care Professionals.

We had a great turn out for our Fire Safety for Elder Care Professionals.  The class was very informative.  Fire is: Fast, Hot, Dark, and Deadly.  People between 65 and 74 are 2 times as likely to die in a fire, 75 and 84 are 4 times, and people over 85 are 5 times as likely to die in a fire.  We need to know: the risk, what is the behavior of fire, the facility safety features, the facility evacuation plans, burn prevention & treatment, and education for fire safety for seniors.   This helps to lower the risk in our senior population.

When choosing a detector, consider:
  • Sensitivity
  • Ionization (Bedroom areas)
  • Photoelectric (Kitchen/Family Room)  Homes should have both kinds
  • Alarm Options
  • Many seniors are hearing impaired.  Alarm should be LOUD and have a visual alert

We had fun learning and cutting up just a little bit.
