Greenwood Place Assisted Living
and The Villas at Bellevue held our first
Fire Safety for Elder Care Professionals.

We had a great turn out for our Fire Safety for Elder Care Professionals.  The class was very informative.  Fire is: Fast, Hot, Dark, and Deadly.  People between 65 and 74 are 2 times as likely to die in a fire, 75 and 84 are 4 times, and people over 85 are 5 times as likely to die in a fire.  We need to know: the risk, what is the behavior of fire, the facility safety features, the facility evacuation plans, burn prevention & treatment, and education for fire safety for seniors.   This helps to lower the risk in our senior population.

When choosing a detector, consider:
  • Sensitivity
  • Ionization (Bedroom areas)
  • Photoelectric (Kitchen/Family Room)  Homes should have both kinds
  • Alarm Options
  • Many seniors are hearing impaired.  Alarm should be LOUD and have a visual alert

We had fun learning and cutting up just a little bit.

In February I went to Macon to take the
Alzheimer's Care Certification Class Day 1
Mott Smith
Part 1 About Dementia
Dementia Basics
This Class went over Statistics About Alzheimer's Disease.  In future blogs I will be sharing this information.
There is so much to learn about the disease and so much research needed to be done.  On February 12, 2015 Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the Capital was held.  It was a success in spreading the word for support for all our needs.  Volunteers are needed to assist the Association Georgia go to  www.alz.org/georgia   for information.
